NELSON -- A 2033-signature petition calling for the reintroduction of national bottle deposits has received the backing of the Nelson City Council's policy committee. Petition organiser Duncan Eddy , of the Motueka-based Community Action for People and Planet, commended the committee for its good judgment. He encouraged other councils to follow its lead in solving glass recycling problems. "The voluntary Waste Packaging Accord will expire this month and no other alternative has been found to tackle glass waste. Councils can either support reintroducing bottle deposits or continue to prop up an unworkable system with ratepayers' money."
